I recently purchased two former cryptid figures. One is an okapi and the other is a giant panda both made by Schleich a German based company whose toys are made in China. I love them as they are very true to life and very detailed. They can be used for education, display or to just play with.
Let's talk about the okapi first, it was "discovered" in 1901 and the first live capture of an animal was in 1918. It's about the size of a mule and looks like a cross between a zebra and a giraffe. It's actually related to the giraffe, something like it's cousin. lol. For years native people of the Congo had been telling stories of these creatures, but Europeans didn't believe them. Sir Harry Johnston was the first person to prove their existence to the world, by obtaining an okapi skin and skulls. I've known about okapis since I was young, but until I'd seen a live one at the Columbus, Ohio Zoo & Aquarium, I'd never realized how big they actually are. I'd always thought that they were small and fragile, like a deer for some reason. But they're just as cool looking in person as they are in pictures. I just love their unique look and gorgeous stripes on their legs.
Now onto the giant panda, it was "discovered" in 1869 when a dead animal was seen by a French missionary and naturalist Pere Armand David. It took many people and many expeditions 67 years from it's "discovery" to capture and live panda. That was done by Ruth Harkness and Gerald Russell. They are very elusive and live in an elevation of 6,000 to 12,000 feet. I'm sure everyone knows what a panda looks like, it looks like a black and white bear, although it is not a bear at all. It is, I will say again, the "cousin" of the raccoon, they are very closely related.
